about the farm
Nestled in the hills of Tennessee on a 250 acre farm near Charlotte, Cave Creek Cattle was established in 2014. The majority of the property used by our operation has been in our family for more than four generations. Going back to the time of the Civil War, our family has engaged in farming activities to include livestock, row crops and tobacco production.
After an extensive career away from Middle Tennessee, Jeff moved back to the farm in 2014 and began the process of building a cattle operation. Our program started with some mixed breed, predominately Angus, cattle but soon migrated to a registered Gelbvieh and Balancer operation. We found the maternal traits, disposition and efficiency of the Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle incredibly appealing.
As a seedstock operation, we strive to provide our clients with superior genetics and cattle that are functional and efficient. We search out females with superior maternal traits and AI those females to breed leading sires. Our focus is on superior genetics and customer service. We strive to breed cattle with strong fertility, growth and staying power.
After weaning, our young bulls and heifers are provided with a limited daily ration of grain and all the hay or grass they can eat. We hand feed all of or our cattle, but especially our young stock. This helps us to continually evaluate their dispositions.
Cattle are removed from our program when they are unable to compete in the areas of growth, fertility or disposition. We constantly evaluate individual animals for characteristics that can be improved or should be eliminated from our program. We cull animals that do not meet or exceed our expectations on an annual basis.
Our program is stacked with multiple generations of AI and ET cattle. We strive to improve on each generation of offspring. As a result, we are constantly retaining heifers and having to disperse older females due to space and resource limitations. We have kept our operation relatively small in order to be personally involved in all aspects of our farm.
All of our cattle are DNA tested to verify parentage and enhance the accuracy of their EPD’s. Our calves are all tested for horned/polled status and coat color. Calves are weighed and measured at birth, weaning and yearling. These steps are taken with the goal of providing our customers with the most accurate information for making their purchasing decisions.
